Well this is amusing. I go and make my blog all pretty again, prune the content and remove all the cruft from past entries – in the process, I lose all my hits, counters, etc. Not that it matters to me anymore. In fact it’s kind of nice seeing the hits start to rise again like a phoenix from the ashes. Soar to new heights. You know, from all five of you.

Then I see the links start rolling in! Excitement! People are linking here once again! What an amazing turn of events! And then I take a closer look. It’s a Russian link farm, taking all the posts from my RSS feed and reposting them in whole to their spam site. Even worse, they’re hotlinking to the photos on this server, and I haven’t setup the proper protection.

So I dredged up this photo gem from the recesses of the server, and I’ll see if the Russia-Bots link to it. If so, I’ll screenshot their site, and repost it here, in continuous meta-references, until the bot explodes or a black hole opens up and swallows us all whole.

Reggie Watts: Out Of Control from Jakob Lodwick on Vimeo

Following up on my last drunken web post, I think I’ll highlight a few of the great websites that are out there that may not have your attention.

As far as video sharing goes, of course there’s YouTube and Google Video. And those are great for sharing large things or seeing highlights from The Family Guy. But the quality leaves something to be desired and it’s mostly just weird clips, not a lot of original material. And there’s not much of a community or social feeling to the site.

Enter Vimeo. By design, it’s been described as a hipster YouTube and it even looks like it’s the love child of The Doug Fir and Readymade Magazine. Which I love.

It’s more like a video Flickr. Lots of comments and discussion around video clips, and they use the latest flash compression, so the clips look a step above most other video sites.

Beautiful UI design, a great group of people and a fantastic community. Check it out. Here are a few of my old video clips: http://vimeo.com/user:124686

I love getting some well composed spam. Here's the latest:

Hello!!!

How are you? My name is Nadejda. I am 26 years old. I live in Russia,
city Yoshkar-Ola. I am cheerful woman, and like to do many things as
sport, camping, go to the cinema, theatre etc. In a word I like to do
all what like all people. I work in marketing structure on sale of
cosmetics. My dream this travel abroad. I know the english language
well enough.. I began to study english language approximately one year
ago. I wish tell to you history which have pushed me write to you. 8
months ago I have got acquainted with the man from other country by
name Justin. During this time we had good relations. We have
understood that our relations become serious and we have decided to
meet in his country. I wrote the application for reception the visa. I
waited reception of the visa approximately half of year. All time I
kept in touch with Justin through the internet and often called to
each other. I and Justin waited reception of the visa to our meeting.
I have received the invitation from the ambassador for reception of
the visa. My director has given me long-term holiday from work and I
have gone to Moscow to receive the visa. I informed good news to
Justin, but he has answered, that does not want our meeting. He
played with me. He has informed that has the wife with two children
and at all has no plans to meet me. I was not ready to such turn of
events. I could not think what even after 8 months of acquaintance he
can so unscrupulously act with me. Now I am in Moscow trip to Moscow
and reception of visa. I do not want that all was gone for nothing and
will be glad if my visa will be useful to our meeting. I could arrive
already through 4-5 days, but a problem in that that now I have no man
which would like my arrival. Probable it will silly sound but if you
will be interested in a meeting with the good woman I shall like to
meet you sometime soon! As Justin was dishonest with me I have
decided to find the man which is interested to meet the woman from
Russia. I do not know your ideas about my letter, but it would be fine
if we could meet and have some weeks or months together. On my trip I
want to receive rest from my work and a life in Russia. Also the basic
purpose for the future it is search good men for serious attitudes
which go to a marriage. I have no children, but I want to have
children in the future. I am the mature woman and ready to creation of
family with good man. I do not know what you really search in the
future but if we could meet I shall be happy to discuss with you more
about our meeting. What are you going to do this time? It would be
fine if we could meet, do friendship or more than simply friendship. I
shall be happy if you also have a free time and we could meet soon. I
do not know your interests, but anyhow write to me back and I shall
tell to you more about myself. Write to me all that you want. Maybe we
have similar plans and it will be interesting to us together.

You can write all that you want. Ask any questions which interest you.
Write to me back and I shall tell more about myself and send more my
photos.

Please, write to me back on my regular e-mail: zolnadja@bk.ru
Have a good day,

Nadejda.

Good, eh?
I wanted to gear up for the next version of Guitar Hero which includes the classic "War PIgs."... It was easy and quick to do, and the format was a lossless one that sounded crisp and clean.

Last night, I found I couldn’t buy the classic “Paranoid” by Sabbath from iTunes, so I downloaded it from bittorrent. I’m gearing up for the next version of Guitar Hero which includes the classic “War PIgs.” I wanted to study it like a text book.

Looking at all of the music available, I noticed one file which called to me with its siren song. Some kind soul (or souls) had taken the list of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs and put them together in one huge file. The whole thing weighed in at about 2.5 gigs, and given bittorrent’s effective multi-downloading, I was able to get it overnight. Overnight, some of contemporary culture’s greatest songs at my fingertips, for free. Let’s ignore the legality of such a thing. It’s amazing that this is even possible.

I get the distinct impression, that despite the RIAA’s ill-concieved and terribly executed campaign against downloading, that we’re slowly morphing into a culture of open source sharing and collaboration that will only get fueled by the increasing effectiveness of technology.

That’s a fancy-pants way of saying, ain’t no stopping us now.

I normally delete Nigerian-Spam emails, but this was so different and unusual that I thought it worthy of notice. My responses in red.

Subject: May this email find you well

I have a new email address!

You can now email me at: henry_lillian2@yahoo.com

Thank God you wrote me Henry, it’s been so long!

Good thing to write you I have a proposal for you, i intend to establish with you and in your country which however is not mandatory nor will in any manner compel you to honour against your will.

Well, yes. Certainly you wouldn’t want that.

Dearest I am Henry .S. Kurubos, 18 years old and my sister Lillian. We are the children of late Mr and mrs Kurubos. Our Father was a highly reputable business magnet-(a cocoa merchant)who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during His days. It is sad to say that He passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on the 12th.Febuary 2005.

I love how ‘cocoa merchant’ is put parenthetically; and that this poor man passed away mysteriously. BUT WAIT. It gets better.

Though His sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of mine who travelled with Him at that time. But God knows the truth! My mother died when I was just 4 years old,and since then my Father took me so special. My father called the secretary who accompanied Him to his lawyer In our country Siere Leone and told him that he has the sum of (USD$8.700,000) ( MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS)deposited with a Bank in Cote’D Ivoire west Africa. He further told him that He deposited the money with the name of a business partner while I am the next of kin.

Him = Jesus. Just saying. Jesus was a cocoa merchant?

I am just 18, years old and a highy school college boy, with little knowledge of business which is why I am in need of a partner whom will assist me to get this fund released for investments in his or her country while I proceed with my education

Dear, I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance on this regard, and your suggestions and ideas will be highly appreciated.

Now permit me to ask these few questions?

1. Can you honestly do this transaction with me ?

Yes

2.can I completely trust you?

If not me, whom?

Please,Consider this and get back to me as soon as possible so i give you the full informations that will be need and i want you to know that you are the frist person i have contacts for this my transaction.

Thank you so much and God bless you abundantly. You can contact with our Alternative email . ..henry_lillian_kurubosfamily@yahoo.ca

Best regards,

Welcome to Blog. A little "inside baseball" for some, but this list of 50 things a Portlander must do will give you a pretty good idea about what it's like to live in the area.

As a Mexican (mas o menos, un media), I’ve always been fascinated by those both scared and curious about traditional Mexican, Hispanic and Chicano behavior. Like, Why do Mexicans sell oranges on the freeway and:

Dear Mexican,

Why do Mexicans have so many babies?

The answer is here. And the rest of the questions and answers are equally entertaining, especially for those of you who have grown up or spent time in the great state of California. It’s truthful, it’s frank and it’s funny. Gustavo Arellano writes this for the weekly Orange County, CA paper; OC Weekly. Think the Willamette Week, The Stranger, etc.

Fear of the "other" can only be mitigated by dialog and discussion. This is a good starting point.
