House (Or is this a money pit?)
Let’s just make it clear from the outset that we love our house. We love the layout, the location, the backyard. We love the rooms that we’ve painted and decorated, mainly with our old stuff. We’ve done a ton of work, the commentary about which will follow. But we are a people broken and tired. We haven’t been to the gym in over a month. My knuckles are cut up. We’re sore. I’ve been getting some nasty allergies and wheezing like an old man with a 5 pack a day smoker.
But it’s our own house! And there’s something to be said for that.
It was at this point that I was going to document the details of each of our projects, complete with photos. I’m tired, I don’t have my camera, and I don’t want to think about it. So there.
By the way, how is that Suri Cruise kid, huh? What a head of hair. It’s like Baby Trump.
Anyway, here’s a list of all the stuff that we’ve done (and stuff we’ve had done.) I have not included costs, as it’s possible that will induce for me a suicide. Pictures will follow, maybe this weekend if I’m not too busy crawling around the attic or something.
Ceiling fan in the master bedroom.
Kit #1: Hung way too low for our short ceiling.
Kit #2: No Mounting bracket.
Kit #3: Same fan, no mounting screws. Learned that the fucking Hunter fan had to be installed into wood. How lame.
Original light box could barely support a bulb, let alone a huge fan. Went to the attic (with loose insulation, not that swell pink stuff on paper), crawled around on my fat stomach on the ceiling, found the joists. Removed the bracket WHICH WAS NAILED NOT SCREWED IN STUPID BASTARDS. Cut a piece of wood to go between the joists. Screwed it in. Put in junction box in new wooden thing. Mounted Hunter bracket (do not buy Hunter unless you’re prepared to work – no screwing into the junction box with this shit) to wood, using 4" screws, 1" bigger than we would have received in the box.
The rest was simple, typical stuff and took about an hour. That stuff above? 3 days. We’re learning. And yes, that’s the fan we put up.
After writing this, I realize how much I need to document the process. So expect another one soon. Maybe the story of our rotten fence.
Once upon a time I worked on things around my house. Now, I drink. A lot.
BTW, it just feels so right to be posting again on LOF.
Coming next….tale of a toilet? That’s a good one. What a nightmare!
house or money pit? my dad would argue its both
