A Short Open Letter to Alan Ball

Re: Six Feet Under

Dear Mr. Ball,

Not everyone in the Fisher family has to be gay.

Thank you,

You have some kinda problem with girl on girl action? Turn in your testicles at the front desk.

  • C’mon man. You know I loves it. And who better to get it on than Mena and Lauren? They’re cute in a non-confrontational way.

I’m just saying. That’s like 75% of the Fishers that are gay / bi. Enough.

  • A workmate and I discussed it in email:

T: Aw c’mon: one gay one bi, that’s well within the 2% average, don’t you think?

Me: Actually, I seem to remember something with Ruth (and Cathy Bates?) or is that just my crazed imagination? And, Brenda (although not a member of the family), surely did that.

T: I think you’re right! But I can’t remember how far it went between them…

Me: So that’s like 75% of the Fisher family that’s gay / bi. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

T: your math is a little off: we can’t count brenda, so the count is 2 bi and 1 gay and 2 straight (dead dad and Nate.) Besides, the Bi’s seem reluctant at best.

Me: Dead people don’t count. They’re dead.Ok, granted, the Fisher girls aren’t full out lesbos. I’m just sayin’…

T: Dead people do count! The family percentage still goes…

  • I don’t remember anything happening between Bettina and Ruth. But, you are right, even if Mr. Ball is gay himself, the series delves really too far into the gay thing.

However, Claire’s experience follows the pattern that has been set up where the art school seems to inspire sexual freedom. Olivier, Russell, and now Claire. Although Claire seems to confuse admiration with sexual attraction…

  • I’m thinking that if you are gay, it probably doesn’t have enough gay. Just like if you’re into kiddie porn, you have to have 3,000+ images in your stash when you’re busted.

Not having cable, I’ve only seen the first two seasons on DVD, so the gay content may have drastically shifted. I thought that for a gay writer, Mr. Ball was exercising gay restraint, perhaps to lure in a non-gay audience.

Queer as Folk: now that’s a gay show.

    This post is gay.

  • Dave, so you’re telling me that seeing “David” butt-hump some dude in a parking lot sans condom isn’t “gay enough” for you? ;-)

  • Dear Glenn, I was speaking comparatively of course. As a government-certified heterosexual, I certainly don’t mind seeing a man and a woman go at it, condom or not. Were I of the gay, I can only imagine that I wouldn’t mind seeing the same thing, only gay.

As to whether on not something is too gay or gay enough, my point is that the opinion will vary depending on your degree of gay.

When I first heard Alan Ball was going to do a show for HBO, I thought: this will probably lean towards the gay. When I saw it I was surprised how much straight time was given, compared to gay shows such as Queer as Folk or American Idol.

    Dave

  • This topic isn’t as hot anymore, but as one can see, even if Claire had become a lesbian, Keith might go straight again…
